Berliet was a French automobile manufacturer, founded by Marius Berliet. It was originally a manufacturer specializing in automotive, especially the luxury automobile, but its activity mainly in the field of trucks that did know.
Marius Berliet (1866 - 1948) began his automotive experience in 1894 with the construction of single-cylinder cars, followed in 1900 by twins models. In 1902 he resumed the work of Lyon manufacturer Audibert and Lavirotte and began building models with four-cylinder radiator honeycomb and based on steel frames in lieu of traditional wood. In 1905, the Company American Locomotive Company, which manufactures locomotives, wants to develop cars and offers to buy the Berliet license for construction of its chassis, particularly robust. The price paid allows Berliet to grow and this is when the trademark logo is a stylized American locomotive.
Before the First World War, the brand offers a range of models from 8 hp to 60 hp: most are equipped with four-cylinder engines (2 412 cm3 4 398 cm3), but a six-cylinder version of 9 500 cm3 is also proposed.
From 1910 to 1912, a model 12 hp of 1 539 cm3 is produced. From 1912, the six-cylinder versions are more proposed on individual orders. Also in 1912 Berliet car that wins the Rally of Monte Carlo. In 1913, production amounted to 3 500 vehicles factory Monplaisir.
