Hotchkiss et Cie car logos and history

Hotchkiss was a car manufacturer and a French arms manufacturer from 1904 to 1954.
Benjamin B. Hotchkiss (1826-1885) was an American who had implanted in Europe, a subsidiary of construction of arms and ammunition which he founded in 1855. He moved to live, near Rodez, to manufacture metallic sheaths just before the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Two crossed guns surmounted by a grenade fire, surrounded by a closed belt loop, this emblem, almost consistent copy of the military insignia of the United States of "Ordnance Department" shall indicate the origin.
The Saint-Denis was inaugurated in 1875. Benjamin filed numerous patents and, until his death in 1885, he left a prosperous society.
In 1902, while continuing its military manufacturing, Hotchkiss launched into the outsourcing of parts for automobiles and in 1904 he built his first frame-20CV engines. Type E - almost 18 liters of displacement - was prepared for the competition.
In early 1920, Hotchkiss adopted the slogan "The car balance" and launched the AM 12CV. In fact, the mark rallied the votes of a wealthy bourgeois clientele who sought comfort and discretion. Starting in 1925, was developing a new line of engines to OHV. The motors of 4 or 6 cylinders were produced with some technical changes until 1954: the 4-cylinder 2.3 l (CV 13) operates in the range of AM2 and the 6 cylinder 3L (17CV) 3.5 l (20CV premises) in the AM80. From 1934, the influence of aerodynamics was felt: slightly sloping grille, trunk and integrated profiled. The body seduced by classicism and distinction of their lines, and Hotchkiss shone at Rally Monte-Carlo and the Contest of elegance. In 1936, the firm offered a truck to cover by 2 tons, with a gasoline engine 4 cylinder of 2.3 liters. After the Second World War, this model was improved with hydraulic brakes and took the name of PL20.
In 1937, to diversify its range, Hotchkiss, who had bought Amilcar, explained the Amilcar-Compound. It was a prototype studied by JA Gregory engineer with the support of the French aluminum. Modern car (front wheel drive, independent wheels, light alloy frame ...), it cost a lot more expensive than its competitors and could not win.
