Lada is the trademark of AvtoVAZ, a Russian car manufacturer in Togliatti, Samara Oblast. All AvtoVAZ vehicles sold today are of the Lada brand, but this has not always been so. Export Ladas were AvtoVAZ vehicles, the same models sold under the Soviet Zhiguli brand in the domestic market since 1970. It became popular decades later in Russia and Eastern Europe, particularly the former Soviet bloc countries where they have become a symbol of the city life. In cities such as Prague in Astana, Kazakhstan Lada cars is a very common car in the urban landscape.

Lada made its name in Western Europe selling the Fiat 124-based VAZ-2101 and its derivatives many as an economy car in large quantities during the 1980s, but later models have not been as successful.

Lada sedan / community property, sometimes known as the Classic in the west (Signet in Canada) is based in part on the Fiat 124 berlina 1966 and has become one of the most successful cars in history. The keys to success were competitive as an export price, simple mechanics easy DIY, functionality, unpretentious, and the lack of competition in its home market USSR. Since 1980 over 13.5 million have been badged as Ladas 'Rivas', (re-style to resemble the highly regarded Volvo 200 series), with another 5 million 1969 to 1979 (badged as 2101-2107, depending on size Engine / interior specifications) for a total of more than 18.5 million. Lada end to the classic series of the 1990s, but production of the model with uprated specifications continues in significant numbers elsewhere. The car was built under license in several other countries.

Which are exported worldwide in the 1980s and 90s, the Lada was a major source of foreign exchange earnings to the Soviet economy in trouble, and was also used in barter arrangements in some countries. More than 3/5ths of Lada production is exported, mainly to Western countries (the U.S. was not the only major market that has imported Lada) and Lada is unique in being the only car brand are at all the continents, including Antarctica (where the Russian research base used Lada Nivas). The rugged design of the Lada Classic, built with a greater width of the steel body, to cope with extreme climates of Siberia, poor roads and few service centers in many parts of Siberia, it means high mileage (300,000 mls [ 480,000 kilometers]) was possible under less extreme operating conditions. Due to its very competitive pricing and ease of service, Ladas are common, as police cars, taxis, and a range of public service and civil defense vehicles in many parts of Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.
