The global auto market suffered from unprecedented challenges in 2022. Many automakers struggled, and their goals were far from reach. Toyota Motor Corp. (TYO:7203) sold 10.4830 million vehicles--the most of any automaker for the third year in a row--but its sales fell 0.1 percent year-on-year. Volkswagen Group's sales hit their lowest level in almost 11 years, down 7 percent to about 8.3 million vehicles; Hyundai Motor Co. (KRX:005380) ranked third globally with about 6.85 million vehicles sold.

Do you know what the world's best-selling car will be in 2022?

The Toyota Corolla was the world's best-selling model in 2022, with 1.12 million vehicles sold worldwide.

Toyota remained the biggest winner in the car market, with four models on the Top 10 list. The Corolla reclaimed the title of the world's best-selling car from the RAV4, selling 1,120,000 units and being the only car on the list to break the million mark. Since its birth in 1964, it has gone through 12 iterations offering a variety of power options, including naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and hybrid, with cumulative sales of more than 50 million units worldwide, covering more than 150 countries and regions.

The Toyota RAV4 came in second with 869,955 units sold, remaining the world's best-selling SUV. The reason for its popularity is its excellent reliability and fuel economy, as well as its excellent product strengths: especially the engine and overall are very reliable. On the other hand, its global sales layout is visible in nearly 150 countries and regions with Toyota sales networks.

This pickup (which includes the base F-150, F-150 Lightning pure electric pickup, and F-series Super Duty) has been the best-selling vehicle type in the United States for 41 consecutive years. The 2023 year marks the 75th anniversary of the F-Series, and more special editions are expected.

Last year, the all-electric Tesla Model Y sold 785,605 units and became the world's best-selling pure electric SUV. It jumped from 15th place in 2021 to 4th place in 2022 and was the first time a pure electric model cracked the top five. Elon Musk's ambitions don't stop there: He says he expects the Model Y to be the world's best-selling car by 2023 as production comes online in Texas and Berlin.
